Madeira Floods
Jersey Side By Side committee members Chris George and Emmanuelle Dumas were leading an exchange group of Jersey music students from the Jersey Academy of Music to the Escola Das Artes in Funchal when the flooding and mudslides struck Madeira. Thankfully not affected by the events, they witnessed at first hand the devastation but also the indominatble spirit of the Madeirans as they sprang into action to rescue and assist those directly affected.
Their schedule of music continued regardless showing the determination of the Madeirans to overcome this tragedy and the universal power and language of music. In this same spirit, Jersey Side By Side organised a concert in support of the Madeira appeal at
St Thomas' Church at 8pm on Saturday 6th March 2010. The audience were treated to a concert of music that the Jersey musicians had intended to perform in Funchal, side by side with choral music and Fado performed by members of the Madeiran and Portuguese communities of Jersey.
