Helping Haiti
JERSEY Side by Side's chose Helping Haiti as their 2011 / 2012 project.
Between 200,000 and 300,000 people died in the horriffic earthquake on 12th January 2010 and half a million were left homeless. A year on, the situation is still extremely difficult, with Haitians enduring terrible conditions and deadly diseases in sprawling camps spread around the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Rebuilding the lives of families in Haiti requires continued provision of food and other supplies that can promote communities to support themselves.
Jersey Side by Side aim to raise £33,000 to purchase 12 grinding mills to transform products like maize into a consumable food and source of income.
Through local associations women will manage the grinding mills, giving them a role in the local economy and improving their position in society. These empowered women will be self-sufficieint and better equipped to look after their children.

In the first of a series of initiatives local schools joined in a Haitain Food Day to mark the 1st anniversary of the natural disaster.
This was soon followed by the unwanted Christmas present sale. Islanders donated unwanted Christmas presents that were sold at a special event held at Fort Regent on 22nd January 2011.
Also during January 2011, St Clements Parish Hall became an evening of Haitian festivities as residents enjoyed Haitian home cooking and a carnival style evening.
Following the success of the 2011 unwanted Christmas present sale the event was re run in January 2012 at Fort Regent and raised a further £2400 towards the appeal.
To date funds raised is £27,567 - we still require more in order to support the women and families of Haiti.
Please continue to support via private donations, corporate or community based events.
